What can you do now?

Before weight loss surgery I couldn’t do the following:

  • Run 3kms without stopping (I couldn’t even run 20m before)
  • Wear clothes that fit nicely,
  • Play sport

I’m no longer a liability to the company I work for.

How I felt before losing weight?Patient Interviews

  • Physically I had knee and back troubles which were just getting worse.
  • I used to sleep a lot but felt neither refreshed nor energised.
  • I felt flat and run down – all the time.
  • I could not walk without running out of breathe
  • I struggled to reach down to put my socks and work boots on.
  • I felt disappointed shopping as finding clothes were getting harder to find

What were my clothes size changes?

  • Before – 44 men’s pants and 7xl shirts
  • Now – 32 men’s pants and XL shirts

How my weight affected my life?

I didn’t enjoy getting out and living an active lifestyle. Although I love clothes, looking good and going out with friends I often felt self-conscious when shopping or socialising.

What drove me to take action?

I wanted to take steps to improve my health so that I could enjoy a full and happy life with my family. I wanted to make sure that I would be around to see my little girl grow up.

What worried before the procedure?

  • Generally, about the surgical procedure and
  • Whether the lap-band would work for me, I had known people with mixed results in the past.

How my concerns were handled.

  • Spending time with the Dr Dolan who went through my questions
  • Meeting the Dietician several times pre and post-surgery helped, and
  • Having a supportive network of family and friends encouraging me along the way.

How quick and how much weight did I lose?

  • In the initial months following surgery I lost a lot of weight quite quickly.
  • After about 6 months it plateaued out and I needed to engage in more physical activity to help maintain my progress.
  • Overall I have lost about 50kgs since deciding to have the lap-band procedure.

What is different about my eating habits and life?

  • I can not enjoy a lot of the foods I used to love like steak and fresh bread.
  • Sometimes it is hard to ensure I am getting enough protein and vitamins because of the way my food intake is restricted.
  • I also have to focus in eating slowing and small regular meals.
  • I have learnt to adjust my eating and cooking styles, and now incorporate slow cooking and soups which I really enjoy.
  • I am also much more active than I used to be and have a lot more energy to enjoy myself and time with my family.

Why I recommend Dr Dolan to others?

I have had great results following the lap-band procedure but it takes dedication to ensure you get the most from the surgery.

It is not a quick fix and requires ongoing commitment and change.

Dr Dolan and his team were, and continue to be, very helpful and supportive with my initial and ongoing weight management.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

Prior to turning 50, I made myself a promise that I wasn’t going to turn 50 overweight, I’m a mum to 18 & 20 year old daughters and wanted to send the correct message to them. Over the years I had tried every fad diet and exercise program available and failed in them all.

How did you feel before losing the weight?

To friends & family I was always the confident happy person that I allowed others to see, inside I was unhappy, not confident and very self conscious.

What can you do now?

The biggest change is I can walk into a department store & purchase fashionable clothing from the rack & not have to shop in the 16+ retail stores. I can order online & know it will fit.

How did your weight affect your life?

I never let my weight stop me from doing anything…however, I hated having my photo taken & would avoid at all costs, or stand at the very back so only my head was in photo.

What were your clothes size changes?

I was a size 22 and not a size 12/14.

What drove you to take action?

My dad was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer & from that point I knew we are all in charge of our own health & well being. We alone are responsible if we want to live a full, long & happy life.

What worried you about the procedure?

I wasn’t worried as I had done some research & knew the Lap Band was the correct choice for me. I am fortunate to have worked with Mr Dolan some years ago at JHC and have many friends who recommended Mr Dolan. I also spoke with the rep’s who supply the product.

How much weight did you lose and how quickly?

To date I’ve lost 36-37 kilos over 14 months under the watchful eye of Mr Dolan & Christine.

What is different about your eating habits and life after surgery?

I look at food as fuel for my body and make conscious choices to eat for energy and well being. A good balance of all the nutrients. I do allow myself a sweet treat but don’t allow that to replace a meal. Life after surgery, oh my word, I don’t know where to start. I’m a 50 year old that feels like she is 30. I had a breast reduction 3 months ago with Dr Anh Nguyen; this was something I had always wanted but my weight prevented me from committing. Today I stand tall, confident and determined to empower others to commit to themselves and reach for the stars to achieve their goals.

Why would you recommend Dr Dolan to others?

I would most certainly recommend Mr Dolan. My journey has been in a word, amazing and since sitting chatting over my options with Kevin, I’m forever grateful & have no hesitation in shouting it from the roof tops. I will say often to friends & family that whilst I made the commitment to myself to lose weight and change how I see food, you need to have the tools available to help you. Mr Dolan has these tools in his team to help you be successful. Thankyou to all for your continued support 14 months on.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

We are a normal couple, with a busy lifestyle and 2 busy teenagers. We love spending quality time with family and friends.

How did you feel before losing the weight?

We were both always tired, never really wanting to go out and spent most of our time at home. We wore baggy clothes and never had the drive to do any form of exercise. Always looked at others wishing we were thinner but never had the desire to change because it just seemed too hard. Juggling busy children and trying to eat healthy at the same time was a mission so we just gave up.

What can you do now?

Since having gastric sleeve surgery, I have done a mini triathlon, done HBF run for a reason and we are both in the gym doing weights. Before the surgery, Andy battled to climb stairs, now we take the stairs wherever we can. Andy has stopped taking most of his medication, his sleep apnea has disappeared and he is a totally different person.

How did your weight affect your life?

Being overweight held us back in so many aspects of everyday life. We were not confident, we always stayed clear of things which now seem so normal but never had the courage or confidence to do or participate in. We cannot tell you when last we had been swimming. It was something we both enjoyed but never done because the thought of wearing bathers in public was painful.

What were your clothes size changes?

Andy went from 3XL to medium and sometimes large (depending on make)
I went from 18 pants to a size 10.
The transformation is something you have to experience.

What drove you to take action?

Andy wanted to buy a certain style motorbike jacket. When he went to try it on and the largest size did not fit, they offered to order a special size in from Europe but he decided that was it…he had made up his mind. He said to the the salesman “I will be back to buy a small size” and that he did.

What worried you about the procedure?

The thought of not being able to ever eat again, which now seems like such a silly thing to worry about.

How your concerns were handled?

Dr Dolan makes sure you know what to expect, and makes you feel so comfortable. His team explain every process and ensure your peace of mind. Even just before they put you to sleep…he asks and checks if you are still happy.

How much weight did you lose and how quickly?

Andy lost 40 kilos in 11 months and I lost 35 in about 10 months.

What is different about your eating habits and life after surgery?

We eat more healthier now and we watch what we eat. We actually eat more variety now than we did before but eat smaller quantities. Veggies are also the star of our dinner plate. We snack all day every day and don’t fool yourself we DO eat chocolate.

Why would you recommend Dr Dolan to others?

If you are looking for a life changing, life saving option then Dr Dolan is the man. An initial consultation will allow you the opportunity to make up your own mind but remember if you are already sitting in his waiting room, then you have already made up your mind.
Dr Dolan has changed both our lives for the better and we are happier, healthier and thinner.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

Happily married 37 year old father of 2 beautiful boys, Noah (4) and Tommy (3 months). Have always been a large guy, happy but always just ‘big’ until I came to the realisation during a family holiday in September 2016 that if I didn’t do something drastic that I would more than likely not be around to see my boys grow into men. The sleeve operation I had completed by Kevin, I honestly believe saved my life.

How did you feel before losing the weight?

Old, unfit, unhealthy and unattractive!!

What can you do now?

I’m playing AFL football again for the first time in over 15 years, I’m riding my bike comfortably again and I can outrun our 4 year old – he is only 4 though!!

How did your weight affect your life?

In every way with every scenario. From getting into cars to sitting in smaller office chairs, to meeting with clients and the anxiety my size gave me and how it affected my confidence, to sitting in planes and on trains. To walking up stairs and climbing up ladders. To buying clothes, to hugging my wife. It affected my life every day, all day at every moment!!

What were your clothes size changes?

From a 50inch pant and a 6xl (54inch) shirt to a 40inch pant and a 3xl (46inch) shirt.

What drove you to take action?

Fear of a heart attack and or death!! Not seeing our boys grow up or being part of their development into becoming gentleman.

What worried you about the procedure?

Having already gone through a failed lap band procedure some years earlier (by another surgeon). Knowing the potential for risk was a lot higher the second time around was concerning but I believed it was a risk worth taking.

How your concerns were handled?

Dr Dolan’s reputation and his reassurance through the whole process. I would highly highly recommend him to anyone thinking of making this big decision. I truly believe that because if this surgery, Kevin Dolan saved my life.

How much weight did you lose and how quickly?

Currently I have lost approx 65 kilograms and have 15 kilograms to go before I have achieved my initial goal weight. From there I will make the decision what I want to achieve.

What is different about your eating habits and life after surgery?

Everything is in halves, half a sandwich, half a meal or simply entree size. Take time with every meal and drinking during the meal is almost impossible unless it’s small sips.
No more beer at all, no more coke or colas at all, in fact no more fizzy drinks at all, EVER. I enjoy an occasional wine or a glass of scotch on ice with water. I have realised since my operation how much I was a binge drinker, I have not needed to get drunk in almost 9 months. I sleep better than I have in probably 15 years, I love to play sport and run again, I have a whole new perspective on life, I am a better manager and work colleague now.

Why would you recommend Dr Dolan to others?

Because it’s a life changing operation and Dr Dolan doesn’t stuff you around, he’s open, honest and genuine. He is a great man and surgeon.
