Everyday we are confronted with unhealthy food options like doughnuts, pizza, and birthday cake at the office. According to recent statistics, over 12 million Australians aged 15 and over have either sedentary, or very low levels of daily exercise. Combine these two issues and you have a recipe for disaster.
As more and more Australians are struggling with excess weight and bad health habits, technology has had to adapt quickly to find a solution to this startling epidemic.
Dr Kevin Dolan is a leading authority in weight loss surgery in Australia, and his research reports gastric bypass provides the best long-term weight loss. Gastric Bypass Surgery is often the most effective treatment for patients suffering from morbid obesity, with no results losing weight through non-surgical means.
In this surgery, Dr Dolan will decrease the size of the patient’s stomach, so only small portions of food can be consumed. Part of the intestines will also be bypassed, meaning that fewer calories are absorbed.
When surgery is needed
Fiona Fraser, a keen traveller and social butterfly, said she knew she needed help when the scales tipped at 138kgs. Originally, she wanted to have gastric sleeve surgery, but when she met Dr Dolan in August 2017 he gave her a few more options.
“He explained there were three options – lap band, gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery. He went through the procedures for all three and also the pros and cons in depth.”
“He knew from my notes that I have type 2 diabetes and recommended the gastric bypass. It has a high percentage rate of being able to reverse the diabetes and he felt it was the best option for me. I didn’t feel pressured into the choice at all – he clearly explained things to me.”
What to expect after surgery
Following on from Dr Dolans initial consultation, in her two-week post operation follow up visit, Fiona weighed in at 113kg.
“I have not been weighing myself weekly or daily as I didn’t want to put too much pressure or expectation upon myself. Dr Dolan said I could expect to lose around 2kg a week, but in the first two weeks I lost 25kg!”
“In hospital, Dr Dolan was confident and reassuring before and after the operation and when he visited me on the ward, he displayed a sense of humour and caring nature.”
“Post-operatively, I had five small incisions on my stomach, each covered with waterproof dressing. I had to keep an eye on them to make sure they didn’t get wet and that there was no pus, redness or swelling.”
It’s not uncommon for patients to feel nauseated after surgery from the pain medication, or to feel nervous and generally uncomfortable lying in bed.
“I had anti-nausea medication to take daily for the first 20 days and I now have to take a multivitamin, iron tablet and calcium tablet each day for the rest of my life. I have an eating plan to follow. The first two weeks after the operation, it was all about fluids, moving from thin, clear fluids to more nourishing, thicker fluids. “
“I also had to wear the tight, semi-stretchy anti-blood clot ‘stockings’ on my legs full-time for two weeks after the operation. I was pretty consistent with that, but have to admit that a couple of times when I went out in those two weeks that I did remove them for a few hours.”
Throughout her bypass surgery, Fiona has had a relatively smooth recovery. Constant follow-ups from staff, as well as Dr Dolan, ensured she had every question and concern answered.
“All the members of Dr Dolan’s team I have had contact with at his Duncraig suites of the WA Laparoscopic & Obesity Surgery have been friendly, courteous and professional. They make efforts to schedule appointments outside of my working hours, answer questions patiently, and if not sure they check and call you back with the answer.”
